Guide to Using a Pet Sitter: Checklist & Tips
September 19, 2024

Planning the perfect vacation involves more than just packing your bags—there’s also the important task of ensuring your furry friend is well cared for while you’re away.

September is Pet Sitter Education Month, a time to recognize the dedication of professional pet sitters. Certified pet sitters are highly trained in pet care, but it’s worth having a pet sitter checklist so your pet can have the best staycation possible!

What is Pet Sitting?

The term "pet sitting” is commonly used for various scenarios. However, pet sitting officially refers to the care provided to your pet in your own home by a professional pet sitter. During their visits, pet sitters handle a range of responsibilities, including:

  • Feeding pets and providing fresh water
  • Playing with, petting, and exercising pets (including walks)
  • Keeping litter boxes clean
  • Giving medicine as prescribed
  • Bringing in mail, adjusting blinds, turning on lights, and more

Pet Sitter Checklist

Here are things your pet sitter should know before any trip:

Feeding Routine

  • What, when, and how much does your pet eat?
  • How often do you give treats?

Exercise Routine

  • Does your pet like to go on walks? Where, when, and how long?
  • Are there any health or behavior concerns while in public?
  • What are your pet’s favorite toys?

Medication Schedule

  • Does your pet take a daily supplement or medication?
  • If so, what do they take, and how often? How is it administered?

Household Habits

  • Are pets allowed on furniture?
  • Are there any anxieties your pet sitter should be aware of?
  • What is your pet’s favorite place to take a nap?

Emergency Contacts

  • How can you be contacted during your trip?
  • If you are unreachable, who else should your pet sitter contact in an emergency?

Vet Information

  • Leave the address, phone number and website of your regular veterinarian.
  • In case of an after-hours emergency, give your pet sitter the address and phone number of your preferred 24-hour veterinary emergency practice.

Household Essentials

  • How do you use household technology like wifi, heating/air conditioner, remote controls, etc?
  • Where can your pet sitter find basic cleaning supplies and other essentials?

We understand that pets are cherished members of the family. Even though you can’t always take them with you, going through this pet sitter checklist will make sure your pets get “fur-st” class treatment while you’re away.
